Ohio LPN Training

Ohio LPN training is a specialized course of education that makes it possible for individuals to become licensed practical nurses. In health care settings, licensed practical nurses play an important role in providing a high level of bedside patient care. LPNs are responsible for making the patient comfortable and for facilitating communication between the patient and other members of the medical team.
Becoming an LPN in Ohio
The first step in becoming an LPN in Ohio is to complete a nursing education program that fulfills one of the following requirements:
- It is approved by the Ohio Board of Nursing
- It is approved by a jurisdiction of the national council of state boards of nursing
- It has been determined acceptable by the board for a foreign-educated nursing graduate
If the applicant is foreign-educated, he or she must also submit a full education course-by-course report from the Credentialing Evaluation Service (CES) and CGFNS verification. In addition, he or she must provide evidence of passing the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
After Completing the Training
Once the education requirement has been fulfilled, an individual can apply for licensure by examination and register to take the NCLEX-PN.
In Ohio, LPNs can also become registered by endorsement. In order to do so, he or she must submit the following items to the board:
- Application and $75 fee
- Proof of successful completion of medication administration/IV therapy course
- Foreign graduates: Official transcript (in English or a Credentialing Evaluation Service (CES) report from CGFNS and evidence of English proficiency
- License Verification
- Continuing Education (evidence of 2 contact hours)
- Criminal background check
- Affidavit (signed and notarized)
A temporary permit may also be granted to those seeking licensure by endorsement. The permit is non-renewable and valid for 180 days.
Renewing an LPN License
The LPN licensure period runs from September 1st of an even-numbered year to August 31st of the next even-numbered year. An LPN must satisfy continuing education (CE) requirements in order to renew his or her license. LPNs must complete at least 24 CE contact hours in a 2 year period. LPNs licensed by endorsement in Ohio for 1 year or less need only complete 12 contact hours of continuing education.
