Becoming an LPN in Pennsylvania
In PA, one can become an LPN either by examination or by endorsement. In order to become licensed by examination, one must be at least 18 years of age and have achieved a high school diploma or GED. He or she must also have completed a Board-approved education program for practical nursing that consists of at least 1500 hours or no less than 1 year. Then, he or she must submit the Pennsylvania Exam/TPP application to the Board of Nursing and then register and take the NCLEX.
Licensure by Endorsement
In order to become licensed by endorsement, one must be licensed in another state or jurisdiction by an education program and exam equivalent to the one used by PA. If the applicant has allowed his or her license to lapse for 5 years or more, he or she must fulfill continuing competency requirements before becoming licensed in Pennsylvania.
applicants can also apply for licensure by endorsement so long as they have completed the NCLEX in other state or jurisdiction. In addition, the individual’s education must be deemed equivalent by the Board based on the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) evaluation.
Renewing an LPN License
The renewal period for LPNs in Pennsylvania is 2 years, with licenses expiring on June 30th of the even numbered years. There is currently no practice hour or continuing education hour requirement.
