Becoming Licensed by Examination in Minnesota

In Minnesota, one can become licensed either by examination or endorsement. In order to become licensed by examination, one must submit the appropriate application and fee. The exam used to license RNs is the NCLEX. Applicants must submit the following items with the application:

  • Evidence of having not committed acts warranting disciplinary action
  • Confirmation of Program Completion from nursing school
  • Canadian Applicants: Verification of Licensure from original state and official
  • Foreign Educated Applicants: CGFNS CES Professional Report and passing score on an English proficiency exam

Becoming Licensed by Endorsement in Minnesota

Those who are currently licensed in another state or jurisdiction can become licensed by endorsement in Minnesota. An applicant must submit verification of licensure in the original state in which he or she is licensed. If this differs from the current state of licensure, he or she must submit verification of licensure in that state as well.

One who is applying for licensure by endorsement may be granted a temporary permit that is valid for 60 days.

Renewing an RN License

RN licenses are valid for 2 years. RNs in Minnesota are required to complete 24 contact hours of continuing education in each 2 year renewal period in order to continue
