The Associate of Applied Science in Radiation Therapy program at the college is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology. The program covers 5 semesters over 24 months. Students learn the principles of radiation therapy. They also learn methods of protecting patients, patient positioning, and upon completing the program are prepared to work in a variety of settings.

Another program which prepares students to enter the field of radiation therapy is the San Marcos Radiation Therapy Program at Texas State University. San Marcos offers bachelors, masters and doctorate programs at 9 different campuses. Students may earn a bachelor’s degree in radiation therapy at the College of Health Professions. Students enrolled in the program at San Marcos receive training in evaluating patients, learning dietary and nutritional requirements, helping with the psychological needs of patients, completing simulated labs, participating in clinical work, and attending seminars.

When a student enrolls in a radiation therapy program, they must complete 1,500 hours of education in a clinical setting, and they must complete courses that are required in radiation therapy laws and ethics. Physics, oncology, anatomy and physiology, and technical procedures are also topics that are covered in the program. In addition to these topics, philosophy, chemistry, radiobiology, biology, and radiation oncology are required courses. When students have graduated from the program, they are eligible to take the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists exam to become certified.
