Our Nursing program prepares you to meet the technical, medical, and emotional challenges of today’s healthcare industry by offering a two-year ladder-style program of increasing knowledge, responsibility, and certification. For example, you'll be eligible for certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant/Geriatric Nursing Assistant (CNA or GNA) upon completion of your first semester of study. After completing your first year of our Nursing program and a five-week summer course (offered on our Cumberland campus), you'll be eligible for the NCLEXPN or to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). (A one-year career program that qualifies you to apply for a Certificate in Practical Nursing is also available.) Completing the second year of our Nursing program enables you to apply for the NCLEX-RN or licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse (RN) as well as your Associate of Science degree in Nursing from Allegany College of Maryland.
All of our nursing ladder programs prepare you to seek employment upon program completion. The programs are offered on the main campus in Cumberland, Maryland (day, evening and fast track courses are available), or at our branch campuses in Somerset and Bedford, Pennsylvannia as well as our site location in Garrett County, Maryland.
If you're interested in pursuing a bachelor's degree in nursing from a four-year institution, our Associate of Science degree in Nursing also prepares you for transfer. To ensure that your credits will be received by your prospective transfer college, please consult with your advisor and a staff member in the Student Success Center. (If you've transferred clinical nursing college credits or general education college credits from another institution to enter our nursing program, you may not fall under this category. Please refer to the Associate Degree in Nursing program admission criteria.) Successful completion of the Nursing transfer program qualifies you to apply for an Associate of Science degree in Arts and Sciences. Because students following the ACM transfer curriculum will not take clinical nursing classes while at the College, they will not be eligible for RN licensure upon completion.
The ACM Nursing and Practical Nursing programs are designated Health Manpower Shortage Programs by the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC). Maryland residents from outside Allegany County who enter one of these programs may be eligible for the in-county tuition rate. Some restrictions apply. Funding availability for this program may change each semester.
Our programs are approved by the Maryland Board of Nursing, 4140 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21215-2254 (410) 585-1900, 1-888-202-9861. In addition, the program located at each of the Pennsylvania Campuses is approved by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing, P.O. Box 2649, Harrisburg, PA 17105-2649 or 2601 North Third Street, Harrisburg, PA 17110, (717) 783-7142. The Nursing Program is also accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, 61 Broadway, 33rd Floor, New York, NY 10006, (212) 363-5555.
The Practical Nursing Certificate curriculum prepares the graduate to assume responsibilities of patient care in hospitals and similar facilities within the scope of the defined functions of the practical nurse. The Practical Nursing Program is approved by the Maryland Board of Nursing, 4140 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21215-2254, (410) 585-1900, 1-888-202-9861. Graduates of the program receive a certificate and are eligible to write the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN) for licensure as Licensed Practical Nurses. One Practical Nursing class is admitted to the College each year in the fall.
