The Practical Nursing Program at Homestead Senior High School:
-The first approved secondary program of its type in Florida
-Is currently the only two-year certified completion high school nursing program in MDCPS
-Allows secondary students to receive specialized training while completing their high school requirements
-Compliments their academic achievements by offering honors credit for specific courses
-Accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC)
-Has maintained 100% passage on the Florida State Board of Nursing Licensing Exam or higher than the national average for the last five years
-Excellent model for the School-To-Career initiatives leading to School Improvement
-Has a major focus on Student Achievement through the promotion of high academic and behavioral standards
-Classes are smaller learning communities with a maximum of 30 students entering at the Jr. Year
-Each clinical group is a maximum of 12 students
-The hospital facilities are our community partners; half the program is clinical practice
-Has a community based Health Science Advisory Council
-Has specified rules regarding attendance and grading, both of which are more stringent than the usual secondary requirements
-Focuses on higher achievement promoting critical thinking, problem solving skills, communication, and cooperative learning as part of the Nursing Process
-Part of the clinical grade is based on Curriculum Based Vocational Behaviors, measuring job behaviors and personal qualities related to career preparation
-Adequately prepares our Nursing graduates for college entry
-A major part of the Practical Nursing Program involves the Nursing Skills Lab
-Students learn through hands-on-practice how to safely administer nursing care to a wide variety of patients.
-Computer Assisted Instruction is an example of Individualized Performance Based Strategies, and is a part of the curriculum and lab in the Nursing Program
