Frederick Community College offers you a certificate in Practical Nursing. The Practical Nursing (PN) certificate requires 43 credit hours and is approved by the Maryland Board of Nursing. Upon successful completion of the curriculum, you are eligible to take the examination for PN licensure.
The clinical portion of the Practical Nursing program is one year in length. However, because of prerequisite courses, demands of the clinical experience and personal responsibilities, the entire curriculum will take at least two years. In order to be eligible for the clinical portion, you will need to apply for the program, take placement tests, complete all prerequisites with a "C" or better, and apply to the PN program by February 1.
Students in the Practical Nursing program combine with students in the Associate Degree Nursing program in the fall semester for NU 101, Introduction to Clinical Nursing, and in the spring semester for NU 210, Reproductive Health Nursing, and NU 211, Medical Surgical Nursing I. PN certificate majors must take the eight-week summer session to complete all certificate requirements and become eligible to take the LPN licensure exam. During this 8-week session, PN students complete program requirements by taking PN 112, Nursing through Developmental Stages, and PN 113, Issues in Practical Nursing.
