ADN Program Details

GCCC's nursing program embraces a career ladder approach to nursing. Students enter the nursing program with a foundation as a Certified Nurse Aide and can progress through an Associate Degree Program with an optional exit, as a practical nurse. Students are eligible to sit for National Licensure as a Practical Nurse after successful completion of the second semester. Students that successfully complete all four semesters are eligible to sit for National Licensure as a Registered Nurse.

The nursing department has been providing for the needs of the healthcare community in the way of educating associate degree (AD) nurses for over 37 years. The first class graduated in 1972 and since then, over 850 students have graduated as an AD nurse. Registered Nurse.

There are two components of a nursing education. These are the theory and science of nursing and the process of caring for individuals in a clinical setting - the art and science of nursing.

The theory and science of nursing is learned in an integrated curriculum approach at Garden City Community College and the student is an active and responsible participant in their learning. It is a goal of the Nursing Program to educate nurses who are capable of self direction and assume responsibility for their own actions. The art of nursing is learned at various healthcare facilities in Garden City and Southwest Kansas, where students learn nursing skills while interacting with clients in those facilities.

The educational process is guided by instructors on the nursing faculty who are Registered Nurses. Through conceptualization and integration of the acquired knowledge, there is a progression from general to specific, simple to complex and concrete to abstract. A primary strength of the educational process in the GCCC Nursing Program is individualized student attention and small clinical groups.

LPN Program Details

A graduate of GCCC's Practical Nursing Program is eligible to take the national examination for licensure as a Practical Nurse. GCCC's 1 year program combines general education and nursing with actual patient care experience. Clinical experience is scheduled at the local hospital and at health care agencies in Garden City and the surrounding areas.

In response to a community need for LPNs, GCCC initiated a practical nurse program in January 2004. The practical nursing (PN) program has played its part to answer the nursing shortage and offer students another avenue to a career in nursing. The PN program at GCCC has been very successful in terms of pass rates and students finding employment in the surrounding areas.
