ADN Program Details

The Associate of Applied Science in Nursing degree qualifies the graduate to sit for the National Council Licensing Examination in Nursing at the RN level. When the graduate successfully passes the examination, the nursing graduate can be licensed as a Registered Nurse. RNs are
employed in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, surgical centers, insurance companies, rehabilitation facilities, resorts, cruise ships, nursing homes, the military and community and public health agencies. Many go on to universities and colleges to earn a bachelor of science in nursing degree (BSN) and master of science in nursing degree (MSN) or nurse practitioner (NP).

LPN Program Details

The Practical Nurse Program was one of the initial offerings when students were first admitted to Glen Oaks Community College in 1967. The Laddered Associate of Applied Science in Nursing Degree Program received initial approval in 1984. The Laddered program consists of Level I (Practical Nurse Program) and Level II (Registered Nurse Program). The Laddered program is designed to provide for the educational needs of students with varying backgrounds, capabilities, ambitions and career intentions. This design also facilitates preparation of nurses with differing competencies to meet the variety of employment needs within the surrounding community.

Upon successful completion of Level I, a Practical Nurse Certificate is awarded and the graduate is eligible to apply for LPN licensure. Upon successful completion of Level II, an Associate of Applied Science in Nursing Degree is awarded. Graduates are eligible to apply for RN licensure.

Students may exit the program after completing Level I and choose to work as an LPN for the remainder of their Nursing career. These students also have the option to return if space is available at a later time to enroll in Level II. Those students who desire to progress in a continuous sequence to Level II may do so if requirements for continuing are met. Currently licensed practical nurses that were educated at other institutions may enter Level II. LPNs must meet nursing program admission criteria and have the prerequisites needed for required courses in the curriculum.
