LVNs measure and record patients’ vital signs. They also prepare and give injections, monitor catheters, dress wounds, and give alcohol rubs and massages. To help keep patients comfortable, they assist with bathing, dressing, and personal hygiene, moving in bed, standing, and walking. They might also feed patients who need help eating. Experienced LVNs may supervise nursing assistants and aides.
The Vocational Nursing Program (VN) isa 44 week full-time program which uponcompletion, leads to eligibility for the National Council of Licensure Examination for Practical Nursing (NCLEX-PN). This course does not guarantee that upon completion the student will pass the certification exam or be employed. The conceptual framework of the VN
program is based on the Wellness-Illness continuum. Wellness is introduced first, followed by man’s adaptations to illness and the ill state. The nursing process is introduced in Fundamentals of Nursing
during Modules 1&2 and then is incorporated in Medical-Surgical Theory in Modules 3&4 and Pediatrics, Maternity, and Nursing Leadership in Modules 5&6. An 80 hour role transition is offered at the end of the program which allows the student to practice the VN skills in a clinical setting of their choice prior to graduation.
