A registered nurse (RN) provides and manages the care of patients
with acute and chronic health problems across the lifespan. At
Harper College, students use the nursing process to assess,
analyze, plan, implement and evaluate patient care.
Students who successfully complete this program are able to:
• provide safe, holistic care for a diverse population of clients.
• utilize critical thinking skills to improve client outcomes.
• communicate effectively with clients, families and members of
the healthcare team.
• collaborate with colleagues and other disciplines in healthcare
to promote wellness.
• practice nursing in compliance with legal, ethical and
professional standards.
• demonstrate a commitment to lifelong learning.
The Practical Nursing Program is a 35-credit hour certificate
program that includes theory and clinical experiences. This program
can be completed in one year. Upon completion of the program,
graduates are eligible to sit for the National Council Licensure Exam
(NCLEX-PN). This exam is required to obtain licensure as a practical
nurse. Consistent with the passing of this exam, the candidate’s
name is entered into the Illinois Department of Professional
Regulation as a practical nurse.
In 2010, graduates of the Harper College Practical Nursing Program
had a 94 percent pass rate on this exam.
