The Associate Degree Nursing program is designed to provide qualified students with the educational preparation for a career as a Registered Nurse. The prescribed curriculum consists of nursing theory, general education and clinical experiences. The graduate is prepared to give direct care to clients with commonly recurring health problems in a variety of health care settings. The graduate of this program earns an Associate of Applied Science degree and is eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) to become a Registered Nurse. The title of Registered Nurse (RN) is awarded after successful completion of the licensure exam. The Board of Nursing may, at its discretion, deny any application for licensure due to, but not limited to, conviction of a felony, commission of fraud or deceit in the application process or addiction to alcohol or other drugs. Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) are an integral part of today's health care system. They are educationally prepared and technically skilled to provide nursing care under the supervision of registered nurses, physicians, or dentists. LPNs may be employed in hospitals, nursing homes, physician's offices, mental health clinics, private homes and industries.
The Practical Nursing program at Itawamba Community College is accredited by the State Board for Community and Junior Colleges. Students are trained in basic science and nursing skills necessary for rendering safe patient care in a variety of health care settings. Skills that are in the job descriptions of a LPN include, but are not limited to, administration of medication by mouth and injections, dressing changes, urinary catheterization, tracheotomy care and suctioning, venipuncture for blood specimen collection, assisting physicians with procedures and patient education. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will earn a Certificate in Practical Nursing and is eligible to write the National Council of Boards of Nursing Licensing Examination to become credentialed as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
