The mission of the Department of Nursing is to educate, enrich and empower nursing students to assume the caring roles and responsibilities of a registered nurse. The faculty identifies the art of caring as the essence of nursing practice. This caring philosophy of nursing is based on the Greek concept of Caritas implying a commitment to ideals outside of oneself. True caring is manifested by attainment of qualities of competence, professionalism, altruism and growth. These goals represent the values of the faculty and are set forth for each student to achieve as an ongoing progressive process and serve as the characteristics of the graduate.
The faculty strives to model true caring for students in order to maximize their educational experience and instill a love of nursing as a profession.
The faculty believes students have the right of educational experiences that promote individual growth. Nursing education is founded on the knowledge of scientific principles which are applied in an environment of caring. The goal of nursing education is to prepare a student who can think critically and is accountable for clinical decision making, modeling the behavior of a caring and competent nurse. Student experiences promote advocacy for health care considering the financial, social, and political issues which influence health care access.
Additional information about the philosophy and organizational framework of the nursing program can be found in the Nursing Department Student Handbook.
Lakeland nursing program graduates are held in high regard by area health care facilities. The demand for nurses, coupled with a quality education, results in employment for our graduates.
Licensed Practical Nurses have an opportunity to enter the nursing program via the Access to Registered Nursing course.
The nursing faculty constitutes one of the major strengths of the Associate Degree Nursing program. They are active in many professional endeavors including participation in professional organizations, and involvement in continuing education activities. All full-time faculty are professionally prepared at the Master's level or above.
Students enrolled in the Nursing Program are provided with a wide variety of classroom and clinical experiences to integrate theory and skills into practice. All students are exposed to some of the most progressive health care facilities in northeastern Ohio as well as smaller community agencies.
