The Merritt College Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) curriculum is a two year program. The program is accredited by the California Board of Registered Nursing and is designed to prepare students for entry
level Registered Nursing positions. Upon successful completion of the ADN program, students are eligible to take the state licensing examination for registered nurses. The course of study includes instruction in applied nursing sciences, related natural and social/behavioral sciences, and clinical nursing experience in hospitals and healthcare facilities located in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The Vocational Nursing Program in the Peralta District has been in continuous operation since September 1952. It was one of the first of three accredited Vocational Nursing Programs in California.
We believe that Vocational Nursing education is the process through which dedicated students learn the components of the science and art of nursing through participation in a planned sequence of related learning experiences in the classroom and in clinical settings. The theory component of our program will prepare the student to apply critical thinking skills at the bedside. It will provide the necessary foundation and encouragement for continuous learning for our vocational nursing students.
Furthermore, the program will prepare the student to assume his or her role in the community with cultural and personal values, and in the nursing profession, as one who accepts his or her responsibility for the continuing development of Vocational Nursing.
