Licensed Practical Nurses must have a strong knowledge of the scientific principles necessary for providing safe, effective health care. They provide hands-on nursing care in a variety of settings including hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, surgi-centers and other health-related facilities. Licensed Practical Nurses learn concepts and skills which allow them to assist the patient by performing dressing changes, administering medications, monitoring IV therapy, collecting data and evaluating the patient’s needs.
Practical Nursing is offered at the Middlesex County Vocational and Technical Schools' Piscataway Campus. Students may apply to take a 15 month day-time or the two-year evening program. The rigorous Practical Nursing curriculum includes instruction in Anatomy & Physiology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Nutrition, Behavioral/Social Sciences, Sociology, Psychology, Contemporary Health Issues, Fundamentals of Nursing, Medical Surgical Nursing I, Medical Surgical Nursing II, Mental Health/Psychiatric Nursing, Obstetrical Nursing, and Pediatric Nursing.
To become a Licensed Practical Nurse, you must have a High School diploma or G.E.D., successfully complete the Practical Nursing program and pass a licensing exam. Applications for the February class are due in October and applications for the September class are due in April.
