ADN Program Details

The Associate Degree Nursing Program is a 2 ½ year program leading to an Associate of Applied Science in Nursing. This curriculum meets the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners requirements for licensure as a Registered Nurse. At the completion of the degree requirements the student may apply for a license and take the National Council Licensure Examination.

Admission into the Associate Degree Program is competitive and students should apply for the program 8 months prior to the semester they need to start specific nursing courses. Applications are available Jan.- March 15 every year. Items considered when determining the most qualified applicants for admission each year include the following:

-HESI A2 scores
-Completion of pre and co-requisite courses: General Chemistry course with lab, Nutrition, Anatomy and Physiology I , English Composition, Introduction to Psychology, and Computer proficiency, Human Growth and Development, Anatomy and II, Speech, , Microbiology, Statistics, and Philosophy
-Grade Point Average
-Science GPA
-Completion of additional courses that could apply towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
-In District status
-Experience in Health care
-Holistically evaluated responses to questionnaire

In addition, students who are entering this program need to be aware they will have to undergo a criminal history check and random drug screens. Based on the results of these checks, student may not be able to complete the clinical component of the degree requirements. Upon completion of the program, graduates must take and pass a national exam for licensure as a professional nurse, and will undergo a FBI criminal history check through the Board of Nurse Examiners and licensure may be denied if any criminal activity or history of certain psychiatric illness is present. Students who need to clarify this issue may apply for a declaratory order with the Board of Nurse Examiners (bon.state.tx.us)

LPN Program Details

An LVN functions under the direction of a registered nurse and/or licensed physician to provide care to individuals who are in need of medical diagnostic evaluation and/or experiencing acute or chronic illness. The vocational nursing program is ideal for anyone who wants to be a nurse, but who may have limited resources of either time or money. Individuals who wish to work in physician offices, long term care, and other areas of direct patient care may consider a vocational nursing certificate. It is also excellent for those who desire a career in nursing but do not wish to spend two or more years in an educational program. The Vocational Nursing program can serve as good entry level preparation for a person desiring a career in nursing and who may want to pursue an additional education at a later time.

The Vocational Nursing Program is a 1 year certificate program that leads to a certificate in Vocational Nursing. Upon completion of course work students will apply to the Board of Nurse Examiners for licensure as a Vocational Nurse. Students must pass the National Council for Licensure Examination to receive the license.

Admission into the Vocational Nursing Program is competitive and students should apply for the program 8 months prior to the semester they need to start specific nursing courses. -Course work on the degree plan and outside of the nursing discipline, including Introduction to Psychology and Anatomy and Physiology I and II
-Course work taken that may be applied to additional degrees in nursing, including Human Growth and Development, English, Math, Nutrition, Biology, Chemistry, Computer applications, and Philosophy.
-Grade point average on the course work taken
-Responses to a questionnaire
-Residency in district
-Experience in health care
