San Jacinto College offers the Associate of Applied Science program in nursing for selected candidates. Completion of the prescribed courses qualifies students to make application for the National Council Licensure Exam-Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN) required of all registered nursing candidates. A license to practice as a registered nurse (RN) is granted by the state to those graduates who pass this examination.
Nursing students receive their education on the college campus where they share learning experiences with other college students. Experience in patient care is received in hospitals and other agencies in the community. These agencies and the Texas Medical Center are known as extended campuses. San Jacinto Colleges professional nursing faculty teaches and supervises student clinical experiences in the extended campuses. This clinical experience is concurrent with theory courses in general and professional education.
The primary purpose of this type of curriculum is to help the student develop as an individual and as a responsible citizen who will become a competent practitioner in professional nursing.
