Registered nurses care for the sick and help people stay well. They provide bedside nursing care in collaboration with a physician in the hospital, in long-term care facilities or in the home. Nurses also provide services in community facilities like schools and clinics. Industry is another setting where nurses are employed. With experience and education, nurses may work in specialized areas such as pediatrics, emergency or intensive care units. Nurses may obtain bachelor’s degrees and advanced degrees such as master’s or doctorate degrees.
This program is designed to prepare the graduate to function in the role of the beginning practical nurse to provide bedside care in a variety of health care settings. The program is approved by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.
Licensed practical nurses assist in caring for the sick under the direction of registered nurses, physicians, dentists or podiatrists. They perform procedures and treatments such as measuring vital signs, applying dressings and giving medications. LPNs work for nursing homes, hospitals, clinics and other health care facilities. With experience and training, they may work in specialized areas such as recovery room, intensive care or obstetric units. However, advancement in the health care field may be accomplished with further education.
In order to become licensed as a practical nurse, a person must complete a state-approved program like SVCC's and pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for practical nurses (PN).
