In nursing, there are primarily two terminal degrees in nursing: 1) the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree which prepares graduates to become a scientist and conduct original research in their professional area of focus, 2) and the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree which prepares graduates to translate existing research into practice. In essence, these two degrees, while very different, work in sync to improve nursing practice and impact healthcare outcomes for healthcare consumers around the world. Nurses with PhD degrees tend to focus their efforts in academia and scholarship, while the DNP graduate tends to impact nursing practice through active engagement in the service/practice setting.
The coursework in the TCU DNP program is completely online and focuses on understanding and managing the complexity of the healthcare environment, using systematic tools such as statistics and decision models for determining the best evidence-based interventions, developing expertise in translational research, actively engaging in healthcare policy and politics, and becoming informed regarding emerging sciences and technology. The TCU DNP program is designed to encourage you to use the knowledge and skills you gain while in the doctoral program along with the expertise and credentials of your advanced practice role to maximize nursing’s contributions in improving healthcare outcomes around the world.
