The Practical Nursing program will prepare you for a career in medicine. As a Practical Nurse, you may work in a doctor's office or clinic, hospital, nursing home, or in a private home care. You will become part of a health care team working under the supervision of physicians and registered nurses in the process of caring for the sick, injured, convalescent and disabled. Some Practical Nurses administer prescribed medicines and start intravenous fluids.
In the Practical Nursing program, you will learn to provide basic bedside care such as vital signs consisting of temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respiration; proper procedures for the collection of samples for testing; perform routine laboratory tests; and how to give injections. As a Practical Nursing student, you will learn to evaluate patient’s needs, develop care plans and supervise nursing assistants under the direction of a physician or registered nurse.
Along with instruction anatomy & physiology, and medical terminology, you will receive training in safety/ infection control nursing procedures. Areas of nutrition, medical and surgical nursing, rehabilitation, maternal and child nursing and geriatrics are emphasized. The classroom instruction reinforces supervised clinical (patient care) portions of the program.
Completion of this nursing program, along with your Practical Nurse License from the Commonwealth of Virginia, qualifies you for an entry-level position as a Practical Nurse. You may desire to work in a doctor's office, in a hospital, or in a long-term care facility. Much of this will depend upon your own personal interests and ambitions. You will soon find that a career as a Practical Nurse offers many satisfying rewards.
