The mission of this program is to prepare students for employment as licensed practical nurses and to ensure that every student meets the minimum requirements for safe practice.
The program is approved by the Florida State Board of Nursing so the graduate may take the examination to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse. The content includes theoretical instruction and clinical experience in medical, surgical, obstetric, pediatric, and geriatric nursing; theoretical instruction and clinical experience in both acute and long term care situations; theoretical instruction and clinical application of vocational role and function; personal, family and community health concepts; nutrition; human growth and development over the life span; body structure and function; interpersonal relationship skills, mental health concepts; pharmacology and administration of medications; legal aspects of practice; Basic Life Support (BLS) course C, CPR for Healthcare provider or equivalent and current issues in nursing. Clinical experience should make up or least 50% of the total program. The Health Careers Core must be taken by all students (secondary, postsecondary adult and postsecondary vocational) planning to complete any Health Occupations program. Once successfully completed, the core does not need to be repeated at any instructional level.
This program focuses on broad, transferable skills and stresses understanding and demonstration of the following elements of the health care industry; planning, management, finance, technical and production skills, underlying principles of technology, labor issues, community issues and health, safety, and environmental issues.
