CNA Classes in Washington DC

Washington, D.C. CNA Training

In Washington D.C., an individual is required to be both certified and licensed to practice as a certified nursing assistant. One must also pass a criminal background check. The first step in becoming a CNA in the District of Columbia is to complete the required amount of course work and hands on training. After completing the educational and training requirements, one is qualified to complete the two-part National Nursing Assistant Assessment Program (NNAAP) exam, which features both a written section and a section in which the student must physically demonstrate CNA skills and procedures. For those who are unable to take a written examination, an oral test may be administered.

Renewing a CNA License

Once the NNAAP is passed, the certification is valid for two years. After the two years are up, the certification can be renewed as long as the applicant has completed at least 8 hours of paid labor as a CNA and 24 continuing education hours. The following scenarios allow an individual to be eligible to take the NNAAP exam:
  • Having no other nursing registry and having completed an approved CNA training course within the past 24 months (certificate of training must be presented).

If more than 24 months, CNA training must be completed again, and a copy of the expired Registry must be completed along with a copy of the new training certificate.
  • Having a current registration out of state in good standing, and applying for 'reciprocity by examination' (must present registration).
