Michigan CNA Classes

Michigan CNA Training

For those who did not attend a traditional four-year college or university, there are still opportunities for careers in the medical industry. Although doctors, nurses, surgeons and administrative staff at a hospital typically have advanced degrees, they depend on the support of other health care professionals, such as certified nursing assistants.

For someone who has always wanted to have a job that would be different and challenging each day, and dream of helping people learn how to take better care of their loved ones, Michigan CNA classes might be the solution.

CNAs are medical professionals perform integral tasks in a health care setting. While there are some institutions that will allow a person to train on the job while preparing to become a full time employee, in most cases, it will be required to become certified before getting hired.

Becoming a CNA in Michigan

In Michigan, an individual wishing to become a CNA must complete a 75-hour training course that has been approved by the state. Online training programs are not recognized by the state of Michigan. Upon completion of a training course of at least 75 hours, the individual is issued a certificate of completion. Then, he or she may apply to take the State of Michigan Competency Evaluation. The individual's registration form and test must be submitted within one year of his or her training.

An individual who is enrolled in an LPN or RN program and has completed a fundamental nursing course with a least a "C" grade within the past year is able to become a CNA in Michigan without completing any additional training. He or she will, however, have to pass both the written and clinical nurse aide exams in order to be added to the CNA registry and be eligible to work as a CNA.

Once an individual has submitted an exemption from training, he or she has 6 months to pass the written and clinical exams. If he or she does not pass in 3 attempts or less, the individual will be required to take the required 75-hour CNA training course a state-approved facility.

After Completing the Training

The testing fee (including both tests) for first-time testers is $176.50. A retest costs $119.00 and $45.50 for the clinical and knowledge portions respectively. There is no fee to apply for an exemption for CNA training.

The testing process includes both a clinical and written CNA exam. After passing these examinations, the individual will be issued a CNA certification, which is valid for 2 years. The individual may renew his or her certification as long as they have worked at least 8 hours doing the past 24 months (with a valid certification) under the supervision of a licensed registered nurse.

Licensure by Reciprocity

If the individual wishing to be work as a CNA in Michigan is already a registered CNA in a different state, he or she must submit a "Request for Exemption from Nurse Aide Training" form along with proof of CNA licensure in another state. Once this is accepted, the applicant is able to the clinical and written examination in order to be added to the Michigan CNA registry.
